A. Characteristics and Habitat
Physically, gourami have a flat, elongated body with wide fins. This ability is supported by the presence of a labyrinth organ that allows them to absorb oxygen directly from the air.

B. Benefits for Humans

C. Role in the Ecosystem

1. As Predators
Gourami, especially adults, often prey on smaller organisms. Their primary diet includes:

  • Mosquito Larvae: Gourami are very effective in controlling mosquito populations. Their ability to prey on mosquito larvae significantly helps reduce the risk of spreading diseases such as dengue fever.
  • Plankton and Algae: Gourami also eat plankton and algae, which helps control excessive algal blooms in the water. This maintains good water quality and prevents oxygen depletion for other fish.
  • Small Aquatic Insects: Gourami also prey on a variety of small aquatic insects, making them an important part of the food chain in river and swamp environments.

This role as a predator helps keep populations of other organisms in check and prevents any one species from dominating the ecosystem.
2. As Prey
On the other hand, gourami are also an important food source for larger predators. They are a vital part of the food chain for:

  • Other Predatory Fish: Snakehead fish, catfish, and arowana often prey on gourami. The abundant availability of gourami provides an important source of protein for these predators.
  • Waterbirds: Various bird species, such as herons, egrets, and kingfishers, rely heavily on gourami as a food source.
  • Reptiles and Amphibians: Water snakes and small crocodiles also prey on gourami.

This role as prey ensures the smooth transfer of energy within the ecosystem. Without gourami, some of the predator populations mentioned above may have difficulty finding food.
