lautnusantara.com There is no doubt that fish is one of the good sources of protein for the body. Apart from the ocean, freshwater also produces fish that are no less delicious as a daily meal. However, it turns out that there are differences in nutritional content between freshwater fish and sea fish. Which one is the richest in nutritional content, huh?

What is the difference between saltwater fish and freshwater fish?

Before we dive into their nutritional content, do you know what the main differences are between sea fish and freshwater fish? They both live in water, but it turns out that these two groups of fish have characteristics that distinguish them from each other.

As the name implies, sea fish live in oceans full of waves and strong currents. That is why, the structure of the spines of sea fish tends to be harder and stronger. However, this is not the case with freshwater fish, on the contrary.

Slower or not too strong currents have become the daily habitat of this type of fish. That is why the spines on freshwater fish are usually smaller and not as big as saltwater fish.

Meanwhile, in terms of taste, many people think that sea fish have a more savory natural taste than freshwater fish.

Which is more nutritious, freshwater fish or saltwater fish?

As a group of fish, both are equally beneficial and rich in nutritional content. However, the amount may differ between the two groups of fish.

Prof Ir Ahmad Sulaeman, PhD, as a professor of Food Security and Nutrition, at the Faculty of Ecology, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), explained about this. According to him, fish from the sea have several nutritional contents that are considered higher compared to fish from fresh water.

For example, the content of natural compounds in the form of DHA and EPA is quite high in sea fish. Especially for fish that are in deep sea waters, for example tuna and skipjack.

However, it does not mean that freshwater fish are less nutritious than sea fish. Regardless of their habitat, all types of fish are certainly highly nutritious.

On the other hand, there are some nutrients that are actually higher in freshwater fish than in sea fish. In this case, for example, catfish , which is known to be high in omega-3 and omega-6 .

Not only that, some types of freshwater fish also generally have higher potassium and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid content.

This certainly makes the nutrients in freshwater fish not to be underestimated. In short, both groups of fish actually have high nutritional content.

However, both freshwater fish and sea fish generally have their respective advantages in terms of nutritional content.

So, which fish is best to eat?

In general, all fish available on the market are healthy to eat. The Indonesian Minister of Health, Dr. dr. Nila Farid Moeloek, Sp.M (K), also explained that fish is a food source that is no less healthy than other protein sources. This includes fish from fresh water and from sea water.

Proven by the high unsaturated fatty acids such as omega 3, 6, 9, iodine, selenium , iron , magnesium , and others in fish. Regardless of the expensive or cheap price of various types of fish, all actually have the same high nutritional content.

In essence, both types of fish can be a choice of daily food sources for you and your family. The provision can be alternated so that each of the nutrients in each fish can be obtained.

Both types of fish can still trigger allergies.

For people who are sensitive or have allergies , both sea fish and freshwater fish can trigger a recurrence of allergic reactions.

It is true that some people are allergic to only certain types of fish. However, this does not necessarily depend on where the fish are farmed.

Fish that get their food through a filter feeder may be more susceptible to reactions after consumption, even if you don't have allergies.

Filter feeder fish are fish that eat particles or organic matter from other living things in the water. In fact, these fish have an important role because they can keep the water clean.

Unfortunately, filter feeder fish are more susceptible to pollution. Not to mention the waste that accumulates in the fish's body can have side effects on people who eat them.

Moreover, if the fish is not processed properly, bacteria in seafood that has not been properly cooled can start producing histamine, which can cause allergy-like symptoms when consumed.

Therefore, make sure to cook the fish until it is done. If you really have an allergy, try to avoid consuming the type of fish that can trigger the reaction.
