This is what pescatarian means

lautnusantara.com - A pescatarian is someone who avoid to eat red meat or poultry, but they does eat fish and other seafood. It can be said that a pescatarian is someone who chooses to eat a vegetarian diet but also still eats fish and other seafood. 


Pescatarians have a lot similarity  with vegetarians. They eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grain, beans, eggs, and dairy, and avoiding eating meat and poultry. But there's one different between pescatarian and vegetarians: Pescatarians eat fish and other seafood. Pescatarian is a diet that mainly consist on plant-based foods, fish, and seafood that may provide health benefits. Fish, like meat, is a good substitute source of protein. Yet, unlike red meat, it's low in saturated fat and often rich in essential fat like omega-3 fatty acids.

Studies show that eating less red meat, or none at all, lowers your chances of getting heart disease and high blood pressure. At the same time, two servings of fish a week may maintain your heart function. Reduce red meat consumption or cutting it out of our diet may also lower your chances of getting cancer. One study shows that people who apply pescatarian diet is live longer than people who follow a diet that includes red meat and poultry.


There are many benefits that you can get when consuming plant-based diets, including a lower risk of obesity and chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Based on some research, you can get many of those benefits from a pescatarian diet too. Another study said that people who follow pescatarian diet had a lower risk of developing diabetes, compared to omnivores people.

You can sometimes have too much of a good thing, fish and seafood are no exception. For example,  some big fish, like tuna, barracuda, swordfish, have moderate and sometimes high levels of mercury. So if you considering to go pescatarian, choose carefully what type of fish you will add to your diet. Children and pregnant women are suggested to consume fish that have low mercury in it. Some type of lower-mercury fish is such as salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, and lake trout.
