lautnusantara.com Indonesia is widely recognized as a maritime country with extraordinary marine biodiversity. Its vast and productive waters make Indonesia one of the world’s leading producers of fisheries commodities. Several fish species harvested from Indonesian waters have high export value and play a significant role in contributing to national economic growth and foreign exchange earnings.

1. Tuna (Thunnus spp.)

Tuna is Indonesia’s most important export fish commodity. Species such as yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) are highly demanded in international markets, particularly in Japan, the United States, and the European Union. Their high economic value is driven by premium meat quality, high protein content, and strong demand from sashimi and canning industries.

2. Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis)

Skipjack tuna is one of the most abundant pelagic fish species in Indonesian waters. Processed products such as smoked skipjack and canned skipjack have stable export markets, especially in Japan and other East Asian countries.

3. Eastern Little Tuna / Mackerel Tuna (Euthynnus affinis)

Mackerel tuna is an important export species due to its affordability, nutritional value, and versatility in processing. Frozen and processed products are widely exported to Southeast Asian countries and the Middle East.

4. Snapper (Lutjanus spp.)

Red snapper and other snapper species are high-value demersal fish in the global seafood market. Major export destinations include the United States, China, and Singapore, primarily in fresh, chilled, or fillet forms.

5. Grouper (Epinephelus spp.)

Groupers are among the most valuable reef fish species, particularly in the live reef food fish trade. Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan are the main export markets for live grouper from Indonesia.

6. Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus spp.)

Spanish mackerel is exported mainly as frozen fish and fillets. Its firm texture and distinctive flavor make it popular in Asian markets.

7. Hairtail Fish (Trichiurus spp.)

Hairtail fish has shown increasing export demand, especially in China and South Korea. Its unique elongated body and high nutritional content contribute to its commercial value.

8. Milkfish (Chanos chanos)

In addition to domestic consumption, milkfish is exported in frozen and processed forms. Key export destinations include the Philippines, Middle Eastern countries, and several European markets.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite strong export potential, Indonesian fisheries face challenges such as international quality standards, resource sustainability, and product traceability. However, the implementation of sustainable fisheries management and improved post-harvest technology provides significant opportunities to enhance export competitiveness.

High-value export fish species from Indonesian waters—such as tuna, skipjack, snapper, and grouper—play a strategic role in Indonesia’s fisheries sector. Sustainable resource management and continuous quality improvement are essential to maintain Indonesia’s position in the global seafood market.
