lautnusantara.com_The snakeskin gourami is very commonly found in Asia, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and other Asian countries. This fish, which has a very distinctive shape and several varieties, is often used by the community either as a basic food ingredient or as an ornamental fish in aquariums. To explain more clearly about the types of gourami, I will describe one type, namely the swamp gourami.

Animal Classification

  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Actinopterygii
  • Order: Perciformes
  • Family: Osphronemidae
  • Genus: Trichogaster
  • Species: Trichogaster trichopterus

The swamp gourami is one of the many types of gourami found in the world. Although the shapes of gourami species are generally similar to one another, this species has distinctive characteristics compared to other gouramis. These differences lie in its body color, which is dull silvery green or bluish, accompanied by black spots, especially at the base of the tail and in the middle of the side of the body. Another distinguishing feature is its caudal (tail) fin, which has a shallow fork and is covered with small spots.

The habitat of the swamp gourami can be inferred from its name. This fish prefers to live in waters such as swamps, lakes, and calm or slow-moving streams without strong currents. Nevertheless, the swamp gourami can also gradually adapt to living in wet agricultural areas such as rice fields and irrigation channels. This explains why many farmers catch this fish while working in their rice fields. In Indonesia, the swamp gourami can be found in almost all regions, such as Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. In other regions, such as Indochina, especially in the Mekong River basin, this fish also inhabits these waters.

The gourami is a freshwater fish that reproduces very easily and rapidly, supported by the abundant food sources available to it. The foods commonly consumed include various aquatic plants and aquatic animals. When swamp gourami are still young, they feed on algae, mollusks, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and small aquatic organisms. As time passes and they mature, adult swamp gourami will consume small shrimp, small fish, aquatic insects, aquatic larvae, and many other organisms.

The swamp gourami reproduces by laying eggs, beginning with mating between male and female gourami near the bottom of the water. They can reproduce throughout the year without being limited to a particular season. The male gourami busies himself building a nest made of dead aquatic plants, which serves as a place for the eggs to attach. He then continues his task by guarding the eggs from aquatic predators until they hatch. The hatching process takes approximately 24 hours. During this egg-guarding period, the male gourami becomes aggressive toward its surroundings.

People greatly enjoy the distinctive taste of swamp gourami meat. It is commonly processed into various dishes, such as fried swamp gourami, swamp gourami with green chili, swamp gourami with chili sauce, swamp gourami chips, and many others.
