lautnusantara.com Indonesia is known as a maritime nation with abundant marine resources. Of the many fish species, tuna, skipjack tuna, and mackerel are often referred to as the "triad" due to their important role in the fishing industry, particularly as export commodities. All three are pelagic fish, meaning they live in open waters or on the ocean's surface.

1. Tuna
Tuna is Indonesia's mainstay fishery commodity with the highest value on the global market. The most exported tuna species include yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna. Their firm, protein-rich flesh makes them highly sought after, especially in the Japanese and United States markets, whether fresh, frozen, or canned.

  • Export Advantages: High economic value, stable market demand, and the ability to be processed into various premium products.
  • Main Destinations: Japan (for sashimi), the United States, and the European Union.

2. Skipjack Tuna
Skipjack tuna (skipjack tuna) is a close relative of tuna, though smaller. Despite its smaller size, skipjack tuna catches are very large, making it a major contributor to fisheries exports. Skipjack tuna is often processed into canned or frozen fish ready for export. Its distinctive flavor also makes it popular in the domestic market, such as in the Manadonese dish Cakalang Fufu.

  • Export Advantages: Abundant catches, more affordable prices, and ideal for processing industries such as canned fish.
  • Main Destinations: Thailand, Malaysia, and countries in Southeast Asia.

3. Skipjack Tuna
Skipjack tuna (Euthynnus affinis) is similar in size to skipjack tuna and is often difficult to distinguish by the layperson. This fish has a softer flesh texture and a savory flavor. In the export market, skipjack tuna is usually sold frozen or processed, such as smoked fish. Domestically, skipjack tuna is a favorite food fish due to its economical price and ease of processing.

  • Export Advantages: High availability and competitive prices.
  • Main Destinations: Regional markets in Southeast Asia and several countries in Asia.

Why Are They the Backbone of Exports?
These three fish are the backbone of exports for several reasons:

  • Abundant Availability: Indonesia has vast waters with large populations of tuna, skipjack tuna, and mackerel.
  • Economic Value: From premium tuna to industrial skipjack tuna, all have significant export value.
  • Processing Industry Support: Many fish processing plants in Indonesia focus on products from these three fish, making the supply chain from catch to export more efficient.
